Rajasthan Tour-Bhandarej Bawdi (Step Well)

Bhandarej- As Mentioned in my earlier post this is the one of the Best Bawdi (Step Well) of Rajasthan.This step well and palace was built long back.In my entire Journey of Rajasthan i found this once of the Best.

What is the significance of a bawdi or step well? I've never heard of it. I'm also curious about what looks like a green door near the top. When I enlarged the picture, it appeared to be painted on the wall. These are intriguing pics, Bharat!

Always been intrigued by these. Water conservation and utilization was so planned in some regions. The wells in Gujrat are covered and have only small opening, India needs to revive such traditions once again. Mindless tapping of ground water resources will leave the land more barren.
